Gradualia Propers for Pentecost

Mass for Four Voices

Latin motets and English anthems

*  Byrd's brilliant, luminous Gradualia Propers for Pentecost were composed in honor of

his Catholic faith, at considerable personal risk in early 17th century Protestant England.

*  Byrd's great Mass for Four Voices is universally regarded as one of the most profound

settings of the Mass in the history of choral music.

*  Revered by his fellow Elizabethan and Jacobean composers as "a Father of Musick,

never without reverence to be named of the musicians," Byrd was preeminent both as

a composer of Latin motets and Protestant England's new English anthems.

*  Chantry also sings this music for a special Vigil Mass for the Feast of Pentecost at 7:00

p.m. on Saturday, May 30, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 5121 Woodland Way,

    Annandale, VA
